Oral History
The Charles Redd Center started an oral history program in 1973 when Gary L. Shumway, a professor at California State University-Fullerton taught a class at BYU. John Bluth directed the program until 1979. Jessie Embry hays been in charge since then. The Center has conducted interviews on Utah, Mormon, and Western American history topics. Some projects include interviews on Charles Redd, Southeastern Utah, Provo, American Fork, LDS polygamy, LDS family life, Mormon chaplains during World War II, American Mormon ethnic groups, Mormon missionaries, the World War II homefront, and Utah labor.
The tapes and transcripts for the Redd Center oral histories are housed in the Manuscript Division of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU. They can be accessed through Special Collections. The Redd Center and Library will provide copies of the transcripts and tapes to researchers. For information, contact Special Collections or the Redd Center. The Manuscript Division and Special Collections has published guides to all their oral history interviews including the Redd Center oral histories.
